New Piercings and Bleeding

While new piercings don’t usually bleed as much as you might expect at the time of the piercing, they can bleed a bit during the first few days of healing. This is completely normal! A piercing is a literal wound and it can take a few days for small blood vessels (capillaries) to constrict and cease leaking into the piercing channel. Some piercings can have mild bruising noticeable in the surrounding area, eyebrow and facial surface anchoring particularly. This will fade over a few days, and is also completely normal.

What to do?

Light, active bleeding:

  • A simple flushing rinse to the piercing area with cool water for a few moments

  • Do not move the jewelry in any way - this can make it bleed again

Moderate to heavier bleeding:

  • Ice compresses can help control this - repeat application hourly, compress 5-7 minutes at a time

  • Do not remove the jewelry - doing so may not resolve the bleeding and can cause other problems

Be patient with your body and your new body piercing(s) as they get used to each other. No panic necessary!
